What Is Photo-rejuvenation?
IPL and Muscle Relaxation Injection for Fine Lines on Cheeks

Photo rejuvenation, a minimally-invasive procedure, only treats the needed areas while leaving the surrounding tissues intact. This provides the clients with smoother, healthier, younger-looking skin. While typically performed on the face, photo rejuvenation can also treat the neck, chest and hands.
IPL Skin Treatments using Photorejuvenation offers a solution that:
- First-line treatment for vascular lesions and signs of photoaging.
- Addresses skin conditions that are most visible
- Treats the entire face, not only small spots
- Causes little discomfort
- Offers an immediate return to routine activities
- Provides gradual, natural-looking improvement
- Produces long-lasting results
Botulinum toxin has been used for more than a decade in facial aesthetics for the treatment of dynamic wrinkles.
Over the past few years, its use has broadened and it is now commonly used as an adjunct to enhance or sustain other rejuvenation procedures, both ablative and nonablative.
Pretreatment has been shown to enhance the effects of laser resurfacing on the upper face. Similarly, pretreatment of glabellar frown lines with a hyaluronic acid filler has been shown to enhance the effects of Muscle Relaxation Injection.
The IPL-Botulinum Toxin treatment is associated with improvements not only in the wrinkles but also in thread veins, lentigines, apparent pore size, and skin texture. There is improvement of facial, neck, and chest wall redness and flushing.
Why IPL and Muscle Relaxation Injection?
Muscle Relaxation Injection has long been used for medical procedures, such as reducing muscle spasms. The cosmetic use of Muscle Relaxation Injections skyrocketed following FDA clearance in 2002 for its use in treating glabellar lines (the wrinkles between the eyebrows).
BOTOX pioneer Dr. Jean Carruthers describes the use of Botox with IPL as "complementary" because:
- Muscle Relaxation Injection gives outstanding results for lines and wrinkles.
- IPL clears the "canvas of the face," smoothing away various brown and red conditions while improving general texture and skin tone.
- While Muscle Relaxation Injection effects take time to appear, IPL effects begin quickly, giving patients near-term, tangible results.
- Muscle Relaxation Injection and IPL treatments can be performed during the same office visit to produce dramatic effects with minimal time investment.
Who would best Represent an Ideal Candidate for Photo Rejuvenation?
Those people looking to enhance the appearance of their face would represent an ideal candidate for photo rejuvenation treatments. Although skin conditions vary from person to person, the more common include:
- Red, flushed faces
- Sun-damaged skin
- Hyperpigmentation
- Enlarged Pores
What is Laser/IPL and how is it performed?
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology is a treatment breakthrough that can correct a variety of benign skin conditions, such as birthmarks, unwanted hair, facial skin imperfections, unsightly small veins, the signs of aging, and other blemishes. This new procedure is called Photorejuvenation.
Any skin can be treated with IPL including skin on the face, neck, chest, back, hands, arms, and legs.
An intense light is applied in a series of gentle pulses over the treatment area. Without damaging the skin, the light penetrates through the skin and is absorbed by the abnormally dilated vessels or pigmentation. The heat causes damage to the vessel or lesion, and the body begins its natural healing process. The lesion will darken before it flakes off or the body absorbs it.
Treatment can be given as frequently as every three weeks.
The sensation of light can be a little uncomfortable and has been likened to a moderate pin prick or burst of heat that lasts for only a few seconds. Each treatment takes about twenty to thirty minutes and provides excellent long-term results. It is not uncommon for a local anesthesia cream to be applied half an hour to one hour prior to treatment if the patients desires.
IPL Skin Treatments using Photorejuvenation are recognised for a very high measure of patient satisfaction. With a series of treatments, IPL technology can help restore a more youthful appearance without patient downtime or a prolonged recovery necessary after other types of treatments.
A series of treatment sessions may be recommended. You can return to work the same day and resume all your regular activities.
This will be discussed during your free consultation with the doctor.

What will the treatment be like?
The procedure is as follows for all IPL treatments:
- Dr Patel will always carry out the treatment.
- The area to be treated is prepared.
- A clear, hypo-allergenic gel is applied to cool the skin.
- The Lumina Q System is then applied directly to the skin and the selected area is treated via a series of intense bursts of light. Each burst of light represents a 5cm2 treated area.
